Authority seeking downtown solutions
In 1999, when Penn State Altoona first proposed establishing facilities downtown, parking was easy.
Now, with Penn State having developed the Devorris Downtown Center, the Aaron Building, the Kazmaier Family Building and the Sheetz Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence and with the Penn Building project underway it not so easy.
And while the Transportation Center parking garage is only at about 50 percent capacity finding street spaces can be a challenge, according to Miller and Dave Walls, co owner of Altoona My Girl Bridal and Formal.
But that would cost between $8 million and $12 million, and there is no near term promise of financing it, according to Miller.

For businesses with 10 customers, it would be even more of a hardship, he said.
He picks up his employees and brings them to work when he can, he said. on weekdays, Walls said.
Even customers sometimes overstay their free time, especially if they trying on dresses, Walls said.
The street parking is actually less critical for his business than for others for which there are alternatives in the area, because customers who can find a free spot on the street often keep cheap jerseys going and head to the mall, he said.
It might help to extend the free time on the street to three hours, Gilbert said although that could make it even more tempting for students to use those spots, Ake said.
Penn State Altoona students Brian Donahue and Joe Glunt bring their vehicles to the downtown campus but use the lots in front of the Aaron Building. There no problem, they said although Glunt sometimes has a tight squeeze with his truck.
But they know of plenty of students who park on the street, Donahue said.
Blair Senior Services doesn have a problem with parking, according to Administrative Services Manager Mike Smith.
